altKEY's 2nd Sustainable Fashion Show
What does it mean to be human? To struggle? To love? To hurt? To be challenged? The digital world, the barriers we draw, and the inner demons have become transparent like glass. What is on the other side? Based on concepts drawn from the memoir written by Jeannette Walls, altKEY aims to build a connection from the dysfunctional and the vibrance that is within our world today to our inner selves.
The Key is altKEY's annual fashion show and scholarship competition. We aim to provide financial stipends for designers focused on using sustainable methods to produce their products. Pieces can be upcycled from thrifted clothing or come from a low waste design concept. However you choose to build your piece, sustainability is the main focus. We can change the world, one piece at a time, fashionably and sustainably.
This year (2021 - 2022) we will be giving out $1,000 worth of scholarships to designers. All are welcome to apply as long as you are within the United States.
Sarah Miller is a 19-year-old college student currently majoring in Film at Georgia State University. She has had a longstanding interest in sustainable fashion, and currently runs an Instagram account that has garnered almost fifty-thousand followers entitled @oliviarodrigocloset, where she posts items that pop-singer Olivia Rodrigo has worn. Her other interests include reading, ballet, and knitting.
There are five sub-themes for the show - turbulence, fracture, obsession, fragility, and entanglement. Each stems from the vulnerabilities and negativities that we face from day to day. It is up to you as the designer to draw from these personal fragments and create a narrative on change and inspiration. We've all encountered many hardships in the past year, but how did we handle them and how did we get through them? Be as creative as you'd like.
